I made a post supporting multicultural neighbors, flagging myself as a safe person, in my local moms group on Facebook and got 304 likes and 253 comments in support. I really want to believe the majority of us stand in love and support of families like yours, and I that this movement of hate and bigotry will end soon. In the meantime, stay hopeful.
You are wonderful for sharing-and I totally agree that this country was built by immigrants and for all the people. I hate the way immigrants and particularly hispanics- have been treated by the media, the President and ICE. What is happening here shocks the conscious of anyone who believes that the Constitution is a foundational document that has radically changed how countries treat their people. No, we have not done enough, and we have been backsliding because of fear and lack of economic controls that help the majority of people. Having 90% of the wealth of this country in the hands of 1% of the population has not helped our society at all. I think we have lost so much ground that we are no longer the shining example of capitalism, freedom, and individual rights we once were. Right now, I must be grateful for the people of Minnesota who have stood up to this "regime" and continue to fight for the rights we have always depended upon. Thank you again.
Thank you for sharing this. I’m grateful for how you center real people, real histories, and real love. Sending much respect to you and your family and those in Minnesota right now.
Thanks for your candor and fire, Kathleen. My wife and I (both white) lived in Black & Latino neighborhoods in South Los Angeles for 35 years before moving up to Tacoma to be near her aging parents and extended family. Our children are white, Latino (Guatemalan), and Black (South Central), one of each. Our whole extended family, some of them strongly conservative, fears for the safety of my two younger kids, and all our other BIPOC friends and neighbors.
Resist, with grace and wisdom. There's no need to become like the ICE who persecute us.
(...indeed, most resisters don't! The temptation will increase, though, as ICE kills more people, and continues to tear families and communities apart...)
Horrifying and heartbreaking. When will the insanity stop? BTW all the members of your family sound like the sort of people who build strong, generous and compassionate nations.
I am keeping your family in my heart. 💗 As a BIPOC myself, I am horrified and terrified. I was just remarking to friends today that it's taking all my energy to put on a happy face and functional normally on a daily basis. I can only hope all the hateful, narrow-minded people will get their comeuppance. The Publishing for MN auction is going well. Even if I don't win the items I bid for, I will be donating to those organizations anyway. We can only get through this by caring for each other.
Thanks for writing this. I am in Los Angeles and it has been heartbreaking to see the stress that my neighbors are under. My kids go to public school here and the district regularly has to warn students and parents about ICE activity in the area. People are scared to go to school.
Thank you for sharing--I'm so sorry you are experiencing this. I appreciate you sharing these resources, too. So many of us want to help any way we can. Sending you all the love. 💗
Thank you so much for sharing such a personal and powerful story. It breaks my heart what you are experiencing and what millions of families are experiencing as well. What is happening to our country and to human decency?
I love legal immigration but we need secure borders, no?
Immigrants 250 years ago crossed the ocean with no promise of welfare and benefits. Big difference from today.

Thank you for sharing your story, Kathleen. I appreciate your candor and vulnerability.
Thank you for sharing such a personal, lovely story. And the fact that you had to warn people not to be hateful — here on Substack — is just so sad.
I know. I felt like I needed to say it, though.
You and your family stay safe!

You married into a special family, Kathleen. Your kids will carry on their heritage with the strength you and your husband instilled.

Just a quick note to let you know this Chicago writer sees you and the sadness/fear your family must be feeling. Thank you for sharing.

Sigh. I'm so sorry for this pain for you and your family, who all sound like amazing and generous people.
